Will Tempe Pedestrian Accidents Decrease?

In February 2010, the city of Tempe completed its six mile Western Canal Multi-Use Path Project that extends from Arizona Mills Mall to Price Road in central Tempe. The project includes a new bicycle and pedestrian path that runs along the Western Canal that connects parks, schools and other popular Tempe destinations.

Along with lighting, landscaping and public art, the project also features HAWK, the High Intensity Activated Crosswalk systems. HAWK is a beacon signal located at two mid-block crossings that include Rural Road and McClintock Drive, both located at the Western Canal.

HAWK will benefit pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists by helping keep them safe. HAWK is designed to alert motorists of when someone is entering the crosswalk. The beacon light will warn motorists that it’s time to start slowing down by flashing yellow for several seconds and then changing to a solid yellow. This signaling will let drivers know they should prepare to stop. It will turn solid red when motorists are required to stop for people in the crosswalk.

The nice thing for motorists is that if there is no pedestrian in the crosswalk, then they will be permitted to precede, as long as the red light is flashing. The signal will turn off whenever any pedestrian has completely gone through the crosswalk.

Mesa Auto Accident Involves Teen Bicyclist

A Mesa auto accident involving a teen bicyclist sends a girl to a local hospital after she is struck by a car while riding her bike. The incident took place at approximately 7:30 AM on Monday morning, August 9, 2010, near Gilbert Road and Southern Avenue.

According to Mesa Police Sgt. Ed Wessing, the 13-year-old girl was struck by a car while going through a crosswalk on her bike. Rescue crews transported the girl to a nearby hospital where she was treated for head, arm and leg injuries. She has been listed in critical condition.

According to witnesses, the car had a green light. However, other cars had stopped for the bicyclist, but the car that hit the teen apparently did not see her. It was also reported that the young girl was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

Police have indicated that the driver remained at the scene and that the driver showed no signs of being impaired.

The Mesa car accident involving the teen bicyclist is still under investigation by local authorities. Police indicate that they do not intend to file criminal charges against the motorist.

This is an unfortunate incident and we wish the young girl a quick recovery during this difficult time.

According to Phoenix Police Department spokesperson Lt. Ben Leushner, the young boy was playing with a group of children outside of an apartment complex when he was struck by a vehicle. Leushner indicated that the child darted into the street when he was struck in the head by a woman’s side mirror. The woman was traveling northbound on 35th Avenue. The driver apparently attempted to swerve to avoid hitting the boy.

Rescue crews transported the victim to St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was listed in critical condition.

Officials indicate that the child was being supervised by relatives in a gated area. However, the child managed to exit the area before running into the street.

An Arizona car accident involving a blown tire claims the lives of two former Ironwood High School students and leaves at least two others hospitalized. The incident took place on Sunday, July 18, 2010, along Interstate 10, approximately 50 miles west of Glendale.

According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the friends were returning from a weekend trip to Disneyland when the left rear tire of their Ford SUV blew. The blow-out caused the driver to lose control of the SUV, which rolled over.

The car accident claimed the lives of 20-year-old Tyler Parker and 21-year-old Marlena Cantu. A third victim, 19-year-old Abby Guerra, suffered critical injuries and remains hospitalized.

A Phoenix pedestrian accident involving a hit-and-run driver claims the live of a woman after she is struck while crossing a busy street. The incident took place at approximately 7:30 PM on Thursday evening, July 29, 2010, on Bell Road.

According to local police, a woman was struck by a black Cadillac while crossing Bell Road near State Route 51. Rescue crews transported the unidentified 35-year-old woman to a local hospital where she passed away the next day due to injuries sustained in the accident.

A Surprise auto accident involving two vehicles leaves a local woman facing DUI charges. The incident took place on Sunday, July 11, 2010, near Bell Road and Avenue of the Arts.

According to Surprise Police, 21-year-old Monique Aguilar was involved in a collision near Bell Road and Avenue of the Arts. Aguilar allegedly fled the accident scene.

There were no details concerning the extent of the accident or whether anyone was injured in the wreck.

Police eventually pulled Aguilar over where she allegedly admitted to officers that she had 8 beers prior to the incident. A Chandler car accident involving two vehicles claims the life of a local man after his car is struck by another vehicle. The incident took place at approximately 6:30 PM on Tuesday evening, July 6, 2010, along 56th Street.

According to Chandler Detective David Ramer, Arik Watts, 31, of Gilbert, was driving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) down 56th Street at the Galveston Street intersection when his SUV was t-boned by a sedan. The force of the impact caused Watts to be ejected from his vehicle. Unfortunately, Watts lost his life due to injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the sedan has been identified as Frank Jennings Jr., 26, of Chandler. Ramer indicated that authorities believe that Jennings was traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. Officials also believe that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs.

A Glendale car accident involving two vehicles claims the life of one person and leaves another with serious injuries. The incident took place at approximately 2:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, June 26, 2010, near 59th Avenue and Cactus Road.

According to Glendale fire department spokesperson Randy Rodriguez, the incident occurred when a Jeep was t-boned by a truck. There were two unidentified victims in the Jeep, an adult male and an adult female. A Phoenix car accident involving a possible drag racing incident claimed the lives of three people and left three others injured. The accident took place on Sunday evening, June 20, 2010, in the West Phoenix area.

According to police, they are investigating whether the accident was a result of a drag race between a 2000 Ford Mustang and a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Police said that the car slammed into a tree.

According to the Scottsdale Police Department, the bicyclist traveling westbound on McKellips Road ran a red light at Hayden Road and collided with a Ford Taurus. The Ford was traveling south on Hayden Road.

The bicyclist has been identified as a 57-year-old man from Glendale. Rescue crews transported the man to a local Scottsdale hospital where he was listed in critical condition. An Apache Junction car accident involving two vehicles claims the live of a woman and leaves three teens injured. The incident took place at approximately 3:45 PM on Monday afternoon, May 31, 2010, on Baseline Avenue.

According to the Apache Junction police, a Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling eastbound on Baseline Avenue when it drifted into the westbound lane and into the path of a Chevrolet Malibu, just west of Ironwood Drive. The driver of the Chevy made an attempt to avoid the Chrysler but was unable to.

The driver of the PT Cruiser has been identified as 56-year-old Olivia Shull. Reports indicate that Shull was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

There were three occupants in the Chevy, all 18-years-of-age. They have been identified as Ray Castor, Kathlyn Hite and Erica Torrez. They have all been reported as suffering serious injuries as a result of the crash. Rescue crews transported Hite and Torrez to Maricopa Medical Center while Castor was taken by air to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately made known.

A Scottsdale motorcycle accident involving a minivan sends three people to local hospitals. The incident took place at approximately 8:30 PM on Saturday evening, May 8, 2010, at 92nd Street and Cholla Street.

According to local police, the driver of a Suzuki motorcycle traveling southbound on 92nd Street allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a Honda minivan that was turning left onto 92nd from eastbound Cholla Street. The crash left three people hospitalized.

The driver of the motorcycle has been identified as Luke Cassidy, 19, of Scottsdale. Rescue crews transported Cassidy to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn where he was treated for injuries sustained in the accident. Police report that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck.

A Phoenix motorcycle accident involving a bike that slammed into the back of a car leaves two motorcyclists in critical condition. The incident took place at approximately 12:30 PM on Thursday afternoon, May 6, 2010, along Interstate 17.

According to Phil Dyer of the Daisy Mountain Fire Department, two men were traveling northbound on I-17, just north of Pioneer Road, at a high rate of speed when their motorcycle crashed into the back of a car. The two men have been reported as being in their late teens or early twenties.

Rescue crews transported the men to a nearby hospital where they were treated for injuries sustained in the accident. They both were listed in critical condition. Their names have not been made known.

Mesa Car Accident Claims the Life of Local Woman

A Mesa car accident involving a police cruiser and another vehicle claims the life of one person and leaves two others injured. The incident took place on Saturday evening, May 8, 2010, near the U.S. 60.

According to Mesa police, a police cruiser heading northbound on Crimson Road near the underpass of U.S. 60 was hit by another vehicle. The second vehicle was traveling southbound and made a left turn into the path of the police cruiser.

The driver of the second vehicle has been identified as 58-year-old Deborah Cowley. Rescue workers treated Cowley for injuries sustained in the accident. Her injuries included lacerations, chest pain and back pain. Her condition was not made available.

Cowley’s mother, 81-year-old Maxine King, was in the vehicle at the time of the collision. Firefighters had to use special equipment to extricate her from the vehicle. She was transported to Desert Vista Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The unidentified police officer was also injured in the two-vehicle wreck. He was treated for neck pain and bruising to his face.
