Dog Bite Prevention Tips for Adults and Children in Arizona

Children are often the victims of vicious dog attacks in Arizona. They tend to be more trusting of strange dogs and sometimes wander in areas where dogs are not leashed. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) refers to dog bites as "a largely preventable public health problem." According to the CDC, adults and children can reduce their risk of being bitten by a dog. The following are tips to prevent dog bites:

• Learn about dog breeds before bringing home a dog.
• Dogs that are known to be aggressive should not be around children.
• Young children and infants should never be left alone with a dog.
• Aggressive games with canines should be avoided.

The CDC also provides the following safety tips for children, so that they can avoid being attacked by dogs:

• Never approach an unfamiliar dog.
• If approached by an unfamiliar dog, don't move.
• Roll into a ball if knocked over by a dog.
• Do not look a dog directly in the eyes.
• A dog that is sleeping, eating or caring for puppies should be left alone.
